HELP REQUEST ANSWERED - Honoring the dead by helping the living is a familiar phrase to the men and women who are members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. When DeKalb County VFW Post 3128 recently became aware that there was a veteran in need of wider doors for his home to provide wheelchair access, they voted to take on the project. Two of the members were uniquely qualified and wasted no time in stepping forward. Wally Ballenger and Dave Cochran showed up at the home of Arthur Bell and his wife Casandra and got started. The initial task was to widen the bathroom doorway and replace the bathroom door. While accomplishing this, the two men noticed that the back door to the home was also too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair. After the work was completed on the bathroom door they didn’t put their tools away. Instead, they went to work on the back door. The work on both doors was completed. Arthur was not there to try out the doors since he is currently away learning to use his new prosthetic leg. His wife was there however, and she beamed with joy as she thanked Wally and Dave for their efforts. Dave had this to say About the project,” It was a very satisfying task. Casandra was very gracious about having us repeatedly invade her kitchen and leave it in a mess.”
Besides the approximately 32 man hours donated by Wally and Dave, the VFW furnished some basic building materials and a 36 inch vinyl clad storm door. A local businessman who wishes to remain anonymous also generously donated a 34 inch interior door and a 36 inch exterior door for the project.
